i am here in sunny california. the most incredible small world story just happened. i just sold a screenplay to Miramax. In finding another writer to join the project, the producers set me up on a meeting with Christopher Peterson, a young writer from THAT 70's SHOW. As we are in our meeting, we get to talking about where we grew up. When I said that Framingham Mass was my hometown, Chris said that he went to camp with a bunch of Framingham people. Low and behold, we went to Frank A. Day together. The meeting soon turned from movie talk, to a flood of memories from our formative years. Dick and Sonya, Sara Mangion, Jen Dublirer, The Burwycks, Penny, Claire Markow, The Goldschmidts and on and on. We sat for hours, reminiscing about the place that helped mold us. The camp that to this day is our launch pad for nostalgiac inspiration. Needless to say, Chris was hired and now Matt Boren and Chris Peterson, to kids from Frank A. Day have met again in the peculiar world of Hollywood and together, we are embarking on a motion picture. I get chills just thinking about it. Although it has been years since i walked the trails of Camp Day, my memories serve me brilliantly. I have the biggest place in my spirit for the camp that served me for eight years. Always....Matt Boren

Greetings Everyone! My brother, Arthur, and I attended Camp Day in 1933-1934. We have never forgotten the great experiences we shared. Clyde Hess was Camp Director. We can still smell the campfires and hear the laughter of our fellow campers...and hearing the Taps sound in the quiet of the night...wonderful memories! We still have the 8mm movies our Dad took during those two years. We've had Video copies made and Loan Copies are available through the office of the YMCA in Newton. Would enjoy hearing form any campers of the 1930's. Arthur is 77 now, and I just turned 75, where did all the years go!
Best wishes, Dick Appleton

Hi everyone,
Camp starts for staff in just two weeks!!!!! Josh Lieberman, Heather Mojer, Eli Freedman, Steve Sarsons, Jessica Bandcroft,Bryan Aja, and on the weekends Mark Goldschmidt have all been working pre-pre-camp. The Senior Basketball Court is being refurbished - thanks to a very generous gift of an alumnus who spent ten years at camp as a camper, CIT, and Counselor. His name is Steve Miller and the court will be dedicated, this summer, in his name. Steve, his wife, Sonya and I all had brunch last Sunday, and had a great time going over many memories that we had in common. Steve and I are jointly working on a project that we will soon be discussing with all the alumni. We are planning a special Alumni event for this summer. Keep posted.

Ten years of public french and that's all I can remember. How is everyone? It's good to see all these old names, brings back a lot of memories. Why, I can remember way back when I was a wee midget camper, Dick McKnight was camp director, and everyone was listening to Madonna and U2. My things have changed! In case anyone has been wondering what I've been up to, for the next several years I'll be attending the University of Nebraska studying Law and Psychology. So in case anyone just happens to be travelling through the vast cornfields of the midwest, drop on by. I'll come by and see how camp is holding up without me when I drive down there in the summer. I hope everyone has fun and good luck!
List of camp people who have been in my kitchen:
Josh Lieberman
Scott Lieberman
Tom Rossoff
Colin MacDonald

Camp Frank A. Day was for me and is still is a wonderful overnight camp experience for many campers who continue to return year after year. The summers that I attended from 1960 to 1968 were the best summers. I looked forward to going each year and seeing my friends. I have always and continue to say that these were the best summers. Of the many things that I learned from Camp Day the two that I remember the most are how to get along with others and how to work together as a team. My oldest and dearest friend, Jason Sobol, is a camp friend who I first met in August, 1960 and we have been friends since. Wow, almost 41 years. He was nine and I was ten. You do the math!
Kudos to Dick and Sonya for their incredible work and continuing the customs and traditions, as well as, add new ones for the current times. Dick, of course, could only be the true historian of Camp Day history as I recall it. Best wishes for a wonderful 2001 season and hope to see as many alumni that can attend on August 12th.

The ladies of Camp Day: Nurse Jane Runge, Mrs. Jane Pickering, Mrs. Poskitt, Mrs. Keith, Mrs. Bechtold, and their children. Also a photo of Waterfront Director, Warren Bechtold teaching a camper how to swim. Wonderful photos capturing wonderful memories at Camp Day. Each time I look at the photos other names come to me but I can not remember them all in one sitting. However other may want to write in and offer the names of those in the photos to help us "old campers" remember.
Thanks again.

Ken Gould::::It is good to see your around.
Now that we have re-built the Senior Court. We expect you at the re-union to make one of your in-famous calls. By the way did the clock really run out in that Atwater game in 1970. The way I remember it : you were retired for Scott Finklestein because Atwater had had ENOUGH of you::; BRING YOUR WHISTLE ON AUGUST 12TH
If anyone wants more information on my Families Alumni Challenge please e-mail me or call me on my cell phone @617-593-5100. We are well on our way to the $25,000 match threshold that we have pledged and we haven't barely touched the Alumni base.Running into Dick Glovsky at a charity golf tournament led to a breafast with Dick and Sonja and the re- furbishing of the Senior Courts. The court was built as a platform to raise additional money for specific initiatives to be created and run by the Alumni in conjunction with Dick and Sonja. My top ten thoughts of Camp Day:
(10) Alan Garber you were my CIT counselor that summer of 1971. ante up Call Ned Morse bring your sneakers and we will see you at the re-union. I met Ben Morse while I was up at camp checking out the progress of the new court right before Camp started.
(9) The current Midget Unit Head was my camper his first summer in camp 1972:::His mother still hasn't left camp since she left him in East Brookfield..Yes, it was my campers who set up the Mess Hall on the H dock in the summer of 1970 , and the Sail boats on the senior field:: That midnight sail with Dana Weisman almost got me expelled for good>etc:::::::::::::::::::Mark Cohen and Albie saved my ass. Danna got sent home and I was the new Sailing counselor for the last ten days of Camp.
(8) Steve Weisman and Stu Fred during summers of 1965 and 1966 pretended to be my counselors but were really running and underground spy ring with Steve Parnell "CUZ" Who will ever forget those ugly green shirts they wore: Now I understand why Parnell got cut by the Eagles after a great career at UMass. He didn't like their green jerseys. Who was a better Athlete Parnell or Yanco???
(7) Who was a better Ref Scott Finkelstein or Ken Gould???Atwater for Finklestein and everyone else for Gould: We always though that Jo JO White had a sweat jump shot. But we all know better Jo White had one shot, a sloppy Hook shot: Did Blasdell do anything other than pitch softball while at Camp?
(6) How many Chuck Smiths live in Provincetown? Witch Morganthal Brother married the Nurse and which one the Water Ski Instructor????
(5) Who had a better jump shot. Barry Harsip Charlie , Kurt Zelman, David Engelsman, Mike Wish, and me all played on a Y team our Senior year in High School (1974) The gym wasn't the same as the Senior court. The baskets were even.
(4) Where is the original "Goony" ? Bruce Katz Coral Springs Fla. He got the Lee Levenson award for complaining about the missed call:and the fixed plaque race:
(3) We all though that Gregg Matteosian was the best actor, but I hear it is Vascom NYC By the way David and I were on two plaques as co- captains the summer of 1966: Where are they ????
(2) How may re-runs of Fail Safe did we watch during those rainy nights in the 60's:::: How come we could buy Popcorn and Soda but not Candy and Soda? I now understand the Canteen was really a gambling ring bargaining for the nearest bottling rights
(1) How many decades has it been for Dick at Camp Day 6 or 7/ Time to step up and give back for all the memories. See you at the re-union:

Subject: Camp Day Email Drive
Hello fellow campers from the 50's and 60's:
As you have heard, there will be an Alumni Day gathering on August 12,
2001 and it has been along time since we have seen each other. I wanted to
try to find as many alumni from our era by EMAIL to see if we can drum up the
same interest that we had about 15 years ago when we did a first reunion.
If anyone knows of someone they are still in touch with and can
forward me their email address please help me out. I did this for a
fraternity reunion from college last November and it was very successful.
The email airwaves are incredible. If you know where someone lives and can
find them on i.e. AOL White Pages and can locate them and their email address
that would be helpful too. Whatever you can do is appreciated. Please send
to my email GARYGOLF1@aol.com. Yes, as you can see I play tennis. HA HA,
LOL if you know what I mean, but seriously, let's try to network and see how
far we can get with email.
I am waiting to hear on email addresses for Steve Cohen, Barry Harsip,
Ken Gould, Peter Seronick, and Alan Suvalle. Stay tuned.
I will keep everyone posted on the list and let you know who I have
contacted and see how far we can get for this year's reunion and even bigger
for next year.
All for now, sincerely, Gary Rachins

What a shot of nostalgia to see the photos, especially from the 60s, and read so many familar names. From Cabin 23 to Tent 1, two years on the fabled Maintenance Crew and my finale as Tent 7 counselor in 1969, my summers at Camp Day encompassed many of the best experiences of my early years. That's me sitting on the tractor in one of the color photos (1967?) and you can see by the pensive expression on my face that even then I was reflecting on what camp meant to me. Or maybe I was just wondering what Rodney and Anne were up to, this time! Camp taught me some life-long lessons about idependence and responsibility, the joys of friendship and need for coexistence, the difference between exercising mere authority and true leadership.
Just one story from the ancient recesses of my memory: One year, my father became very ill during the school year and my camp re-registration for the coming summer was one of the last things on my parents' minds. Perhaps days, but certainly no more than several weeks, before camp was about to start, the oversight was discovered, but that season was fully subscribed. I don't know how it was done, but I was told that Doc Simmons had, and more importantly used, his discretion to find a place for me. It was an act of kindness that changed my perception of how the world, or at least small parts of it, can work when individuals take the time to care.
Finally, its time for the President to issue an unconditional pardon to Ken Gould so that every one of us who experienced the business end of his whistle can get on with our lives. (Ken, with all of the comments about you, you've clearly left quite a legacy!)

wow, you have a great memory. Reading your message brought back some
terrific times. To answer your trivia questions, Al Morganthau married the
nurse, I had forgot about Greg and the waterski instructor. Greg was my
counselor in Cabin 16 in 1967; probably the craziest counselor I ever had or
knew of. I remember him and Steve "Benny" Bennett getting drunk for every
Atwater game. Benny is the first cousin of one of my partners. Dick has
been at camp since the 40s, so six decades. I guess I was one of the few
three decade people (60s-80). Lee Levenson lived across the street from me
when I was in West Roxbury in the 80s. He was teaching at Nobles &
Greenough at the time. Last I heard he moved to Connnecticut to take a
position as headmaster of a private school there. If you could track him
down he might know where people like the Wadmans and Myersons are.

It's wonderful to see all the comments from former campers and staff. Alumni day on August 12th should be a great day.
I would like to request the following:
IF ANYONE HAS POSSESSION OR KNOWS SOMEONE WHO HAS POSSESSION OF "BORROWED" CAMP DAY PLAQUES, PLEASE BRING THEM BACK TO CAMP ON AUGUST 12TH. I'm sure Dick McKnight would appreciate this.
There is only one proper place for the camp plaques, hanging up in the dining hall with all of the others.

The pictures and comments on this page brought back terrific memorories of my 13 years at Camp Day as a camper, CIT, counselor, Ass't Midget Unit Head, Midget Unit Head and Program Director (1966-76; 1979-1980). I even found two pictures of myself; one of my Tent One mates from 1969 (Counselor Ned Morse, Greg Matteosian, Albie Shapiro and the rest) and the other a staff photo from the early 1970s. Does anyone else who was at camp in the 60s and 70s remember:
The five mile road (dead man's curve and the bridge); raking endless loads of leaves in pre camp; reveille, taps and all of the other bugle calls; stories of first year campers being killed by Dan; honor cabin and inspections; the hoppers in the old greenies; hare and hounds, counselor hunts (my secret hiding place was the old ladies greenie); camper hunts (how come we never caught ANY campers); scavenger and treasure hunts; playing pool at Bascomb; the best water in camp; waiting for the plaque race standings to be posted on the bulletin boards; were the plaque races fixed?; midgets running 4.4 40s; track, swim and canoe meets; swimming your 6 and 17; buddy board; crew (holding those white poles); on duty; candlelight service (all of those candles burning down on the steps); chapel (the same sermons and songs year after year), Ed saying graaaaace; Yack; Indian Village; chanting lobego to make the fire start magically at midget Indian Village Night; Greg Morganthau's ghost stories, like "the coffin"; all midgets report to the council ring; headquarters and store; the motel; morning line up; sweeping the midget court; putting up and taking down the docks, tents, baskets and goals; street hockey on the old tennis courts; trips to the Banjo Pub, the Sturbridge House of Pizza and New Braintree; midgets playing speedball, team handball and newcombe; target shooting at the sandpits; watching the sunset and rain storms from the balcony of the boathouse; all of the paddles downstairs at the old boathouse; award's night and the P.I.T.A. Club; U.G.L.Y.; choosing teams and captains; 57 inning softball game, the longest game ever; final steak dinner, roast beef on Sunday and franks and beans on Saturday; rainy days in the mess hall; color war (goldrush, apache relay, greased watermelon, brain bowl; flag rush, tug of war) campers trying to figure out a way to bring in the 10,000 point rock by the shower house; making Olympic flags and medals; finding, painting and hiding rocks for gold rush; The Fair in Spencer; the midget and junior softball fields; vollyball on the junior court; white bucks; finally getting flush toilets; the CIT House; basketball at the barn; playground games (kill the camper and nike mike were my favorites); blue, red and white ribbons; canoe trips to "The Point," Mr. England's in West Brookfield and Camp Atwater; intercamp Olympics; the Atwater pick up truck; the green Camp Day station wagon; playing Atwater in softball and basketball (didn't Stretch play against the Juniors seven years in a row), George Albro and crew beating Atwater by 40 points at halftime and them quitting (didn't Ken ref that game?); plaque games for all the marbles; junior staff vs. senior staff softball games; juniors (with Coach Burns) vs, seniors in football in 1967; midgets vs. juniors in team handball in the mid 70s; Moby Grape; Yoffe and the kerosine, Rittenberg and the rake; Ramon Rivera and the arrow; kids breaking their legs at flag rush; all camp capture the flag; how did Dwight Colburn's car get on the dock and the senior field; tetherball, horseshoe, tennis and four square tournaments; the junior bocce court; the midget shuffleboard court; mafia vs. CIA; listening to disco; painting the inside of midget headquarters red, white and blue for the bicentennial; minow, fish, flying fish, shark and porpoise, Lifeguarding and WSI classes; trips to Ma and Pa Holmes'; the wacko who ran the little store by the public beach (what was his name?); water inundating the beach and coming up to the steps to the dining hall; sliding down the hill at Quobbin, "what if the string breaks" and trips to the farm and the Basketball Hall of Fame; tango; kitty whist and contact whist, the official camp card games; rounding up the midgets to the tune of Rawhide; bedwetters in Cabin 21; long Indian names for Midget plaque teams; the farmhouse; the Island in the junior unit; playing tag football by the midget greenies and king of the hill behind Cabin 23; 7A, 007 and 8A (the best cabin in camp); store; collating Daylights; the names of the staff members from past years posted at Jr. Headquarters; the camper's pal (paddle) which I still have to this day; putting sleeping kids' hands in shaving cream and shortsheeting beds; bringing pizza from Rom's back to the campers and having them fall asleep while eating it; basketball under the lights at the senior court; painting cabins, lines on the courts and everything else that didn't move; bunk beds; closing the tent flaps and cabin shutters before it rained; Paul Los mowing the grass; how sad it was to see the trunks out in front of the cabins on the last day; visiting day and father's weekend; packing my trunk three month's in advance to make sure I was ready; an Olympic gold medalist in canoeing; and most of all the people I had the pleasure to work and play with and most of all have fun with for all of those years.

Mark, hope that you and I can take a trip soon back to camp. A little trivia on your monologue just to make sure that you understand that I was and still am as crazy about this place as you.
"Rittenbberg" first name "Steve" baseball star at NewtonSouth in 1974:Who was the counselor who carried him to the nurse that August night in 1967. The answer is "Mike Gold" Now you might remember that this happend one famous August night in 1967 when Jose Tartable of The Boston Red Sox ( weak throwing arm) threw out Ken Berry ( Chicago Whitesox at the plate with Elston Howard making a great play blocking the plate to give the Red Sox a crucial win in the Pennant race of the Century. Steve Rittenberg couldn't contain himself as we listned to Ken Coleman's play by play. He ran out of the cabin and created the "curse of the rake"
Now I Think I could give you or make-up this level of detail of everything that happend during the summers of 1965- 1974
The wacko at the public Beach, (besides the time that Chuck Smith dived in and smashed his face on the lake bottom )was "LOYD" By the way that was after we biked from Camp to the Oxford drive in to watch summer of 42: Day off say no more; Every camper in my cabins of the early seventies took a walk to Loyds with me to chat about life and sample one of those famous micro wave sandwiches. The current Midjet Unit Head (Krasnow) was my camper during the summer of 1972. I think he liked the sandwich better than our talk.
I remeber taking a walk to the "bell" with Steve Parnell my homesick summer of 1965.I remember being lectured about sportsmanship by Dick the summer of 1968 .Steve and Dick's words I still remember to this day.
I think I almost killed a camper in one of those "top of the hill" campers vs couselors wars with Mark and Albie. Road trips with them and Ned cann't be defined.

Is Stephen Miller still tan???Was that Basketball game for the plaque race really fixed???Ken Gould should come clean and we should continue the game where it left off in 1971, Katz fouled Miller and he should be back at the foul line. legend has it that Lillenthal bought Gould a life long supply of BIRCH BEER at the "store" to have the call go his teams way.He paid a fancy price Miller would of missed the free throw. I no I played intramurals with him for 4 years at Umass. He could play shortstop, but he couldn't shoot free throws a lick. See you at the re-union

Steve--
You don't have to convince me of your devotion to Camp Day--I remember--and your leadership of the Alumni Initiative speaks volumes too. Your recall of camp trivia is very impressive. You are right about Lloyd--I recall his bushy beard and the bumper stickers for rather unusual causes. I was very pleased to see that Lee Krasnoo is now the Midget Unit Head. Lee was once the youngest midget in the camp when he was in Cabin 21. Lee, Eric and Shari were three of my favorite campers and Lee's mom, Nancy, and I were roomates in 1979 and 1980 when she was Senior Unit Head and I was Program Director. By the way, Shari gets my vote for the best athlete to have attended Camp Day in the 1960s and 70s and Eric and Lee were great wrestlers as well.

Well the years fly by. Memories of Camp Day still linger.
My camp counselors: 1960 Dick McKnight, 1961 Bob McCarthy, 1962 Bob Poskitt, 1963 George Bloom, 1964 George Bloom, 1965 Bob Alter, 1966 CIT counselor John McCabe. Counselor in cabin 9, 16. Nine wonderful summers.
Senior staff: Doc Simmons, Ed Poskitt, Dick McKnight, Coach Fisher, Chef Brown, Leo McGurk, Warren Bechtold, Harry Pickering, Nurse Runge, Charlie Tuttle.
Fellow campers: Teddy Bloom, Marty Weiss, Alan Lapidus, Bob Glovsky, Mark Friedman, Dolf Vanderpol, Bob Smith, Arthur Frank, Jim Seder, Joel Brodsky, Dave Rodman, John Liggims, Peter Brown, Gary Rachins, Mark Lewis, Ricky Levin, Leon Geller, Dave Bergman, Ronny Rechnitz, fellow C.I.T.s: Jason Sobel, Gerry Lewis, Andy Levin, Gary Rachins, Jack Vengrow, David Stolper, Peter Newman.
Most memorable moments at Camp Day: Candle Light Service at the waterfront with Mrs. Simmons playing the organ, Coach playing the recording "Dangerous Dan McGrew" every 4th of July. Dave Bergman's imitation of Ed Poskitt "live" on Award Night. Canoe trips and overnights at Tobins on Lake Quebog. The frog pond. Fishing from the boat dock. Induction of Midget captains by Dick McKnight at Indian Village. Doc Simmons singing and talking with us at Sunday Chapel service. Haircuts by "Al the Barber". Starched "White Ducks" returned from the laundry, so stiff they could stand up on their own. Black and white old movies in the dining hall, so terrible I can still remember some of the dialog, - the bats flying in the dining hall were more entertaining. The bugle calls. The boat bell. Free soda if you returned a soda bottle from out of state. Award Night ending with Doc reminding us to visualize the beacon light in times of trouble.
Many memories, and many intervening years, but I still remember friends and fun times at Camp Day.

Oh man!!! I can't get over this site and the day I've had today. I'm an alum from '70-'76 and I hadn't been back to the camp while it was in session since '76! So I took a ride out there today to look around, and after seeing my old cabin 24(yes, they called me bloody knuckles Jackson after punching out Ducky(John Pelitier) in a hockey brawl between cabin #24 & cabin #23 in '70!), 13,15, 16, 8A, Tent #4, The Sprite sailbout, and rowboat 4 on the waterfront. I don't know what to say. It was great to spend some time with Dick today talking about the camp and it's toils since Jack Haskins, and reading the comments of Mark Cohen in his message from 7/14/01. I need to take a few days to digest all of this history. "The Morganthal and Mateosian Brothers"! I haven't thought about them in a long time. Unfortunately, I can't make the 8/12 gig, but my thoughts will be with you all.
Be good and enjoy the 12th,

It's 3:00 am and I can't sleep. What a great day at Camp. I would like you to share this note with the campers and staff if you find it appropriate. I want them to know how special their camp (which was once our camp) is to us today.
I have already taken plenty of Advil and have pledged to get in better playing shape before the re-union and our one-day plaque race. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to spend the day at Camp. It was very special Gregg, Mark and I arrived at Camp driving by the Red Barn singing the Camp Song just as we had for the first time way back in the 60's .We progressed to the Junior Courts where Gregg and I tried to regain our shooting touch. The key word was tried. As we moved by the waterfront and up to the Mess Hall you had three grown men searching for their plaques that they won, something like 30 plus years ago. An Argument of course occurred with Gregg claiming that the Matteossian Brothers, Vaskin, and David with him accumulated the most Family Plaques. We insisted, just to get him crazy which didn't take much, that we thought that either the Kepner's or Yanco's probably had them beat. In fact didn't Lee Levinson always beat Gregg? He reminded me he was my captain in 1967 (California Institute of Technology) in the juniors. Another just miss opportunity. Oh well my 1966 Midget plaques are still missing ( Walla Walla and Bellacuda??) We called David M from Camp to confirm that they were not in his possession. We were all in awe walking through the Mess Hall revisiting the History that was such and important part of all our lives and the Thousands of Campers and Staff before and after us. The values, discipline, and tradition that were instilled in us from those years live with us to this day.
As we left the Mess Hall we walked to the Senior Field (visions of George Albro, Ned Morse, Garber, Blaisdell and crew beating us in another Senior Staff / Staff softball game. Lillenthal, Zelman, Chuck Smith, Finklestein, Kepner, Katz, Pony & Horse, Mouse & Rat, Harsipp, Noymer, Weisman, Glovsky, Parnell, The Sobols’, The Yanco's, CUZ, Lee and Eric Krasno and on and on. We had stories about all of them as we walked every inch of the Camp chatting about stuff that enriched our lives. Of course it always came back to the Plaque races and the missed calls by Ken Gould. Didn't Ken cost us all a plaque? The B Ball games in the Barn on those rainy nights when we suppose to watching the 100th re-run of Bridge over the River Kwai or Fail Safe. The car that kept disappearing and the pranks that keep getting embellished every time we talk about them.
As we first watched the kids interact we weren't quite sure how we felt about the co-ed plaque race, or the co-ed concept in general. After all we never experienced it. We developed an opinion quickly when Michelle (who is she anyhow) and two guys kicked our butt in a three on three spectacle during half time of the Camper game. Respect was instantly earned. The energy in the Mess Hall was special. The interaction of the Campers and Staff was refreshing. . The "Old timers" were respectfully addressed as "the Alumni" and wouldn't quit, like we wouldn’t as campers. We sucked it up and completed the game(s) It was about pride and not embarrassing ourselves to badly in front of the campers. Watch out Gregg can now shoot, we intend on doing better at the re-union. We are both in extensive training. We found ourselves after dinner back on the court (we couldn't get enough of the interaction of the past and the present) playing on a court that we played on in the 60's and 70's, Mark into the 80's One that now bears my name and one that has all the History of all those Atwater Games, and Plaques Races, truly Priceless. We were urged to play "One Bounce". Maybe next time, once we figure out what it is.
The Waterfront. We found our way down the slide (noticing all the pretty girls) we were starting to really understand the benefits of this co-ed thing. We found ourselves onto a canoe, and again we were envisioning one of those plaque races of the past as we were racing around the lake. Gregg and I visited residents, along with paying our respects to Ma and Pa Holmes, Lloyd and just enjoying the tranquil feeling that the day brought.
No cell phones, no deals just three guys thankful for the opportunity to re visit the past and experience the future. Gregg and I are planning on being back up for the weekend of the re-union if that works for you. Mark and I hope to bring our sons and celebrate the 30th anniversary of Color War that we so proud to be a part of in 1972 as founding counselors of the event. Mark will be representing the Grey and me the Green. Thank you for a very, very special day. See you at Camp in about two weeks.

Where is Ken Gould today? I hope that he still has his whistle. You know, the one that he blew way to often::::and not when he was suppose to. I hope that Matteossian brings back the Padres plaque from 1970, you know the one that Ken Gould gift wrapped and put a bow around. That is one plaque that unfortunaely probably will never be returned. Does Ken Gould have the courage to acually come back to Camp?

You guys are all crazy: Who is Ken Gould? Could Dick please set things straight so we don't have to worry about this Ken Gould character. Is he related to CRAZY DAN or WHEELCHAIR MARY?or is he in fact Crazy Dan. He sure seems old enough to be him. I heard rumblings that the Atwater game was fixed on July 4th. July 4th Crazy Dan, Ken Gould. I think that I now understand the connection.

It it true that Mark Cohen and Steve Miller are going to be at Color War this summer. WoW!!!!I remember the first color war. I think 1972. Those two guys were intense and crazy. I was 8 years old and in Millers cabin.I remember a walk to the Bell and to Loyds?? when I was homesick. Have they been at Camp all these years? They promised us that it would become bigger than the plaque race.I will never forget that summer of 1972 . We were woken up at midnight; and the the Midgets were broken up into two camps and marched to the mess hall. The rest is fuzzy but I now reflect on those two and a half days of non stop excitement, and intense competition. I am thankful to of had experienced the first color war at Camp day with the original cast of "animal House" Nice legacy for those two guys and the rest of the original staff of color war.

Although modesty no doubt prevented Steve Miller from mentioning that at lunch the entire dining hall spontaneously chanted "we love Steve" after he was introduced as the person responsible for the new basketball court, he otherwise gave an accurate and complete description of the visit he took to camp with me and Greg Matteosian this week. I thought I would share with the alumni reading this guestbook, however, my impressions of camp as it exists today. I was struck by how much camp today is like the way I left things exactly 20 years ago. There are some new additions and improvements--a new rec hall near the crafts shop where the "new" tennis courts used to be; new showerhouses, new boats and a slide on the waterfront; new apshalt tennis and basketball courts where the "old" clay tennis courts/field hockey/team handball arena used to be; and an addition to the dining hall. Otherwise, however, things are the same as always. The cabins are still green, the tent platforms are still gray, the plaques and record board are in the dining hall and the camp looks great, thanks to Dick and Sonya and Mike Aja, the terrific cook/maintenance person who has been at camp for 15 years now. More importantly, the people are pretty much the same too. Yes, half the campers and staff are female and there are a lot of people who talk with foreign accents, but the campers and staff that I saw (and we spent the entire day walking around the camp and interacting with campers and staff alike) were uniformly happy, enthusiastic and polite. The campers still talk about who will be plaque captains and what teams they will be on; they are still excited about the last and next color wars; the seniors still like to congregate at the senior court after dark and shoot the breeze about the day's events; and campers still straggle in late to instructional swim and have to be rounded up by the counselors. We even got to observe Midget Unit Head Lee Krasnoo and his staff pick the plaque teams, in the same manner as I used to when Lee was a midget. I got the impression that the people who are at camp love the place just as much as we all did in our day. I left wondering why it had been so long since I last visited. If you are reading this, I urge you to go to the reunion or visit camp while it is in session the next chance you get. I can guarantee that you will be greeted as a long lost friend. Dick and Sonya would love to swap stories with you about campers and staff of days gone by and if you are lucky, as we were, maybe Dick will trace for you the geneology of the "Crazy Dan" family. And when you come, bring a check; whatever you can afford. Although the camp is as full as it has ever been, it still could use your help to buy a new boat bell, refurbish the steps to the dining hall or perhaps create a campership so that some kid who otherwise could not afford to go to camp can experience what you experienced. Right before my father passed away, many years ago, he asked me only one thing: "When you get the opportunity, give something back to Camp Day, it made you a mensch." I plan to take that opportunity now.

What about mugsey and the kantor brothers? I helped take the the flag pole at midnite and hide it in the woods, then put the national anthem on at full blast...that was one great caper. Then there was the fork, any fork, which picked the lock to the freezer key for midnite snacks and sandwiches after the basketball games. Contact kitty whist, yes yes, but only with a midget giving you a shoulder rubdown. I danced on a table at the Banjo Pub at the age of 16. Bring back the World Horseshoe League (WHL). Stopped by camp on 8/05/01...didn't even know it was still open...it looks great!

Mythology always played an important role at Camp Day -- from Crazy Dan to individual exploits that are obviously still very vivid in the minds of so many of us. Beware, however, of myths that are closer to the truth than we may realize. Judging from all the emails that refer to it, looming large in the memories of many alumni is the shadow of Ken Gould. It makes me a bit nervous to read the comments about him that are thinly disguised challenges. Those who knew Ken, or think they did, recall him as a slightly bookish young man, except when he stepped on to the hard court with a whistle firmly planted between his teeth. Think back to the steely-eyed way he'd look at anyone questioning a call. Now, keep in mind that Ken had a richly-deserved nickname known to a limited number of people: "The Thug." Again, I have to emphasize that it was richly-deserved. For those of you who will be at the reunion this weekend and who have thrown comments about Ken so casually, be sure to look around carefully. Is Ken back in Indianapolis? Is he somewhere closer? Is that him down by the old ice house, or watching from nearby trees? Is it just another Camp Day myth? See you Sunday.

CC: CAMP DAY ALUMNI POSTING:
Sorry that Gregg Matteossian, Mark Cohen, and I missed you and Charlie at Camp a couple of weeks ago. It is ironic after all these years that we visited Camp within two days of each other. Please forward this note to Charlie and forward to him my e-mail with Mark's and Gregg's along with information on the Alumni Web page. One of the staff told us that one of you is living on the West Coast and one still local. Is that accurate? Your right those summers were the best. Imagine what they would of been like with the new co-ed format. Gregg and I stayed the weekend in one of the tents (You can only imagine what was going on) with my son who accompanied us to the re-union. He has a Jump shot and can go to his left at twelve better than I ever could. Much like Charlie could when he dominated the courts as a Junior and Senior. Today, Charlie and I wouldn't of had to walk half way around the lake to find girls like we had to in 1971 and 1972 .Seriously I wouldn't of changed anything from my ten years at camp. Oh wow!!! 30 years ago we took those walks. 30 years ago was the first Color War at Camp Day. Seems like yesterday. Mark and I are considering going back for the thirtieth anniversary as founding Counselors of Color War. These memories are exactly what prompted me to initiate the Alumni challenge, and revitalize the Senior Court. Camp Day and its values, has and continues to this day to have a defining role in my life.I want to try to help ensure that kids in the future will have the same opportunities to experince Camp the way we did. This is not a plea for a pledge. If you or Charlie, or anyone else for that matter want to know more about the Alumni Challenge just e-mail or call me in my office. Now back to important stuff. The re-union was great this weekend. Harry Pickering and Wife ( just as we knew them in the Sixties, as if frozen in time), Warren Bechtold ( almost as fit as the current Waterfront Director all these years latter) The Sobol's, Barry Harsipp ( the only basketball player in Camp Day history that had a better shot than your brother or Ken Yanco) , Steve Aronson, Goldfarb ( who was visiting his own son and daughter current campers) , Rodney Yanco's Wife ( Rodney passed away last year) Pony( one of Rodney's closet friends at Camp), 3 of Rodneys Kids who are attending Camp to see exactly where it was that Rodney was so happy all those years, Phil Levine who has led the way with the whole Alumni Website and movement with obvious pride of his roots at Camp , Matteosian ( who was always the leader of the Matteossian legacy) Dick and Sonya who continue to lead the camp through another decade ( impacting kids life as they always have) and on an on. Most who attended were from the 60's and not from our run through the 70's .The weather kept allot of people away, and we need to be better organized as alumni going forward. Never the less it was a very emotional outpouring of memories by guys who hadn't seen each other for thirty plus years. Our Mini plaque race and trivia session with Dick were filled with memories of yester year. Next year we are talking about a pre camp alumni weekend. Hopefully next year you both can attend along with new attendees . By the way after being reminded how you and Charlie manhandled the staff in a game on my court Gregg Matteosian and I redeemed ourselves in a big way this weekend. We managed to stay with the Campers, and Staff non stop for almost two and a half days. The first thing we decided to do was sleep in the tents to gain some level of respect ( The real reason we couldn't envision sleeping in Blaisdells house) Of course just turning 45 I am paying the price now .Remember Gregg was a great swimmer ( of course he won the 2001 swim meet in his Speedo) and aggressive Athlete but played Basketball like Gregg Kite. He was a quick study and I got back my shooting legs back. Mark Cohen during that first visit was so mesmerized by how much Camp was so different but so the same that he was uninterested in the game at hand ( was their anyone in Camp history other than Dick that did more to keep the Camp tradition alive) .. Great to find old friends. Hope to hear from you and Charlie, and the rest of the Alumni before next Springs Alumni weekend.

I have left open my matching pledge until we meet our goal of 25,000 from the Alumni. There isn't anyone better to put $50,000 dollars to work than Dick and Sonya. This is truly amazing. Fiona Shukri (also an alumna) emailed me the link this morning. I just spent last weekend with her in New York City, where she lives. I have been slacking off this morning on the job, just reading the postings. I was one of the first 11 girls to attend Camp Day in 1976, at the age of 10. I attended as a camper, CIT, jr. counselor and counselor for about 10 years. So many wonderful memories came flooding back! I would love to make contact w/ all my old friends and see everyone at a reunion next year. It would be great to introduce my two boys (ages 4 and 16 months) to my old camp. It is so great to hear that Dick and Sonya are going strong and that my old pal Lee Krasnoo is the Midget Unit Head. As for me, I've lived in Pittsburgh, PA for the last 8 years and work as a disability rights attorney. Please email with your news!

I attended the Second Session Color War last week with my son Matthew (Gray won by the way). I can report that Color War is just as good, if not better, than it ever was. Many of the activities are different than in my day, but the essentials remain exactly the same as they were since the first Color War in 1972--the cheering throughout the day; the team shirts, the march to the flagpole in the morning; the final ceremony with the Camp song and the team cheer; these are still the most important parts of Color War. I have to confess that today's crew is much more creative when it comes to the song and cheer than was the case in my time. I walked all around the camp during Color War; I saw nearly every activity. I stayed up late in the night observing the Green team compose its cheer and song; I watched the kids practice throughout the day, I talked to lots of people, I hid the capture the flag flags and all throughout the day, everyone that I saw was totally and completely in to it. I guess we were right 30 years ago when we said Color War would be as big or bigger than the plaque race some day and that is no knock on the plaque race, which I love too. For me, the highlight of the Color War was the final part, the "chip ceremony," a new tradition. After the cheer and song and the winner is announced, each staff member, from the Directors down to the CITs take a chip of wood, say why they "want to keep the spirit of Camp Day alive" and then throw the chip into the campfire. I thought that this would be hokey and perhaps it was for many of the campers, but I found it exceptionally moving. There were so many interesting and beautiful things said that I couldn't relate them all here, but suffice it to say that I found it incredible what camp means to the current staff. What you alumni will be most interested to learn, however, is how much YOU and the history of the camp means to today's staff. In a day when most young people today view the 80s as ancient history, it was remarkable to hear staff member after staff member say that what meant the most to them was the history of the camp and seeing alumni come back to visit. The staff members could say whatever they wanted, but many choose to talk about the alumni. One counselor said that she was moved at meeting the Lilienthal brothers (although she didn't know their names) come to her cabin to see the beds that they had slept in "ten or twenty years ago" (you guys must have kept in good shape!). Another talked about alumni looking at plaques they had won so long ago. Many others talked about how special it was to meet alumni who returned for this year's reunion or about reading the memories posted on this web page. Others talked about the photographs of campers and staff from days gone by that are posted at Alumni Hall (the new addition to the dining hall) (I even saw two pictures of myself there). You can be assurred that the history and tradition of Camp Day and your own triumphs and memories live on at Camp Day and will continue to be meaningful to campers and staff of the future as well. I spent the better part of three days at camp this summer and can report back that this is truly the golden age of Camp Day. Camp set all time attendence records this year; the staff is the most experienced I have ever seen (has there ever been a time when the camp has had four senior staff members with more than twenty years at camp?), everyone seems to be happy and enthusiastic and the facility looks great. When I was on staff in the 70s, we wondered if there would be a camp to go to the next year. Things looked bleak for a while, until Dick and Sonya came back to literally save the camp from extinction and bring it back to where it is today. For that, they deserve your help to keep it that way. For as long as they are at camp it will be a place that you will be welcomed home and where you can relive your memories of your youth. Matthew came home raving about how much he loved camp. He can't wait to attend next summer. And I can't wait to share in his new memories.

The terrible events of September 11 demonstate how destructive hatred and intolerance can be. Let's hope for a better world, and that in it's own way, Camp Day will continue to provide an environment where people learn to live together and get along with one another.

Its nice to read the guestbook and see old names that bring back memories. I remember that I didn't really have that much fun my first year, but there was just something that made me want to return. Camp has some quality to it that is just special. I'm glad I did return.

Steve Miller and I got together with Dick and Sonya tonight. We discussed a date for the next alumni reunion (June 21-23) and projects that the alumni can fund. The idea that we all liked best was a renovation of the Senior Field,a new diamond, lighting, maybe a scoreboard. Think how cool it would have been when you were at camp to play or watch games at night under the lights. To make this vision a reality and to ensure that the reunion is the most successful ever, however, we need your help or input. All alumni, whether you were at Camp sixty years ago or last year are invited to participate in a committee planning the reunion and alumni gift or to just put your two cents in as to ideas you have. If you are interested in helping, please e-mail Steve (his address is on this page) or myself.

Hi everyone,
We are excited about the plans for an Alumni weekend next June. It's always great to get together with friends from Camp Day!
On December 23rd, Sunday, between 7p.m. and 11p.m. Sonya, Amy and I are having our annual Holiday Open House. If you are in the area of Newton, we would love to greet you at our home. We live at 38 Woodward Street, in Newton MA.
A reminder that the annual Camp Reunion will be, as always, the Sunday of Martin Luther King weekend, which will be January 20th. That reunion is held at the West Suburban YMCA, 276 Church Street, Newton MA. It starts at 10a.m. and ends at 12 noon. We give out the yearbooks at the reunion. (If you are unable to be at the reunion and had ordered a yearbook, we will mail them out to you after the reunion.) Incidently, the yearbooks have already arrived and they came out very well.
This is a fun time on year with all the holidays and such. It is a time to think of giving gifts. Don't forget Camp loves to receive gifts also. Right now, every dollar given to the Miller Challenge Fund will be matched. So, a $100.00 from you will mean $200.00 for Camp.
A Daylight (the Camp Newsletter) will be coming out shortly. Watch for it in the mail.
We love you all,
Dick

Senior Field Lights, Camera Action: Great concept: an actual Diamond, Bleaches. Imagine those games of the 60,s and 70's being played under the lights - I think mayby we should have an old timers game under the lights when the project is complete. An all Century Camp Day softball team: Make your selections and post them on this site - Here is my all Century Team:

I was a camper in the late 50's in the Midgets and Juniors, and still have great memories of my four summers there. (Somewhere I also have many rolls of movies that my father took at every Father's Day weekend too.)Hope I can make the reunion and reminisce about what a wonderful life experience FA Day was. I would love to hear from any campers from my era.
