Please e-mail with your thoughts regarding what should be the criteria for choosing a recipient and please contact me if you know of a worthy candidate for the scholarship. And of course, if you would like to help contribute to the scholarship fund and help give some child the gift of Camp Day, your support would be appreciated.

comments: The Alumni Reunion Committee is trying to locate as many alumni as poosible who might be interested in attendng the reunion. To that end, I have been goig through my old Daylights, from the 1960s and 1970s, to try to track down the names of alumni. A side benefit of this project has been a great trip down memory land. I am going to post a series of articles that summarizes some of these memories. The first installment will be a history of Camp Day that I first wrote for a 1976 Daylight. I think that you will find it interesting. If any of you would like the full original article, or copies of any Daylights from any year, please contact me and I will be happy to send it to you. And if you have names (and preferably addresses) of old campers and staff that you would like to invite to the reunion, please get me that information

comments: Camp Day--The True History--Part I--The camp property was discovered by C.D. Kepner, a leader of the Newton Y. A wealthy Newton man, Frank A. Day, had bequethed money to the Y to fund a camp. Mr. Kepner travelled all over Ne England to find the perfect location (The Kepner family had a long association with the camp, including Bill, a Midget Unit Head in the 1940s and Bob and Steve, campers in the 1970s). The site where camp is located was once home of the Quabog Indian Tribe. The tribe named Lake Quacumquasitt, which means Great White Goose in the Quabog language. The original camp property was purchased from the Bedell family, which owned the farmhouse. Originally, the camp property was 1/3 its present size. The dining hall was built before the camp existed--at various times it was a roller skating rink and dance hall. In the early 1900s, a steambooat brought picknickers to the camp property. In its first summer, there were just six campers. The area around the farmhouse and Midget Field was not purchased until after WWII. The first Camp Director was William McPherson. Clyde Hess became director in 1921 and in his 17 years as Director, the camp began to grow. In 1927 the camp divided into Junior and Senior Units. The Midgets were not established until 1935. In 1928, electricity was brougt in for the first time. In 1931 the dining hall was screened in. The first cabins were built in that same year; before that all campers lived in tents.

comments: Camp Day History--Part II--In the 1930s, horseback riding was an important part of the camp program. Sailboats and canoes were added in the late 30s. In 1938, the camp was hit by the Great New England Hurricane. Flooding caused water to rise to the second level of the boathouse and the camp was severely damaged. During this era, the waterfront did not have an H dock, but it did have a slide and high diving board. Crafts was an important part of the program and was located in what is now the "Country Club" building next to the Senior Miller Court. The camp newspaper, called the Daylight even in the 30s, published once a week. For a time in the late 30s, there was a Ranger Division, for boys 16-18. They spent most of their time camping out. In 1940, tuition was $12 per week. The camp song, writen by Edward Campbell to the tune of "Cornell," is the same as it is now. In 1941, CW Johnson, who had been Assistant Director for many years, replaced Hess. Then, in 1945, the Doc Simmons era began. Doc served as Director for the next twenty years. While Doc was Director, camp experienced its greatest growth and was regularly full with 180 campers and a long waiting list. For a while, it was nearly impossible for a new camper to be admitted unless a relative had gone to camp. During much of this period, "Coach" Fisher was the Junior Unit Head and Reggie Smith was the Waterfront Director. He was succeeded by Warren Bechtold. Ed Poskitt and Forbes Keith were unit heads during part of this period and Harry Pickering was the crafts director for 15 years. Vinnie Morotto was the sailing and music head for more than 10 years. Dick McKnight replaced Coach as Junior Unit head, and when he married Sonya, she became the nature instructor. In the late 40s, the Midget and Junior cabins were built in their current locations. For a time, the Junior Unit was divided into Junior A and B, the two groups went to activities seperately. There were no CITs until 1966, but "relief counselors" lived in the Motel and filled in on days off. The plaque race begin in 1947 and except for a brief time in the late 70s has continued to this day. The Director's cottage was built in the late 50s, and the Midget Unit HQs and what is now the Junior Unit HQs (It used to be the home of the Waterfront Dirctor)were built in 1952. In 1961,the Midget bowl, which had been dirt, was paved over. When Doc passed away, Ed Poskitt became Camp Director. Harry Pickering served as Assistant Director in 1968 and 1969. In 1970, the Y decided that its staff should fill the Director's position. In the next decade, Joe White, Vin Goglia, Paul Mercer, Jack Haston and John Donovan would each briefly fill the director's position. During this same period, enrollment plummeted, dropping to as few as 50-60 campers at some points. During this period, Ned Morse (Midget), George Albro (Junior), Harry Blaisdell (Midget and Senior) and myself were some of the longer serving unit heads. In 1979, however, Dick and Sonya became directors, built the camp back up to where it stands today, and the rest, as they say, is history. I was at camp from 1966-1976 and 1979-1981, including three years as Midget Unit Head and a couple as Program Director, so someone else will have to write the rest of the history from 1982 onward.

All the fine young men over the years who made the waterfront the best. Thanks to all you guys who taught swimming, canoeing, boating and sailing to so many!! How cold it got in late August! Doc Simmons, our mentor and inspirational leader. And still marvel at Dick McKnight's devotion, love and stick-to-itiveness over so many years!! The tradition of Camp Day lives on beautifully under his devoted leadership. Canoe races, tug-of-wars, 17 laps - Bobbie Suvalle doing them swimming in vertical position the whole way. Buddy up!, Soap baths, crystal clear water, the fireplace, putting in the docks, taking them out, and many other great and pleasant memories. Warren Bechtold former Waterfront Director (late 50's and early 60's)

comments: Dear Friends from the years 1959- 1963: Sorry that I cannot attend but I did want you to know that I am there in spirit. The Camp Day experience seems to raise positive memories and stories on a very regular basis regardless of where I am. To give a little update on my life -- I moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1995 having had enough of the strenuous life of a collegiate head trainer at Northeastern University in Boston. I had worked there for 24 years, graduated both of my children there and my wife and I decided to sell the snowblower and the lawnmower and move to the desert Southwest. I took a job at Santa Rita High School where I continue to provide daily medical coverage for our student athletes and will stay here until retirement. Things are much more laid back out here and the weather is terrific. Things have gone well for me for which I am very greatful. As I think back on the memories of the Junior Unit I cannot begin a list for it would be to long but highlights would be the groups in cabins 10 and 8A, working with "Coach" and Dick MicKnight, soap baths in the lake, whites on Sunday for the Chapel service with "Doc", trips to Mt. Manadnock and Sturbridge Village (we still use the recipe for the oatmeal cookies I enjoyed there), award nights in the dining hall, ESSC being selected as a team (that was East Stroudsburg State College which was my undergraduate school - I had to battle with the captain about making a small school the winner of a plaque!), husking corn at 6:00AM for Chef Brown and thinking it was an honor to be selected!, Coach's paddle with THIS IS IT! engraved for all perpitrators to see up close and personal and that whack he gave even made my ass sore! And as I mentioned earlier, memories come back regularly -- a friend came down with "pink eye" this week and I shared with her the epidemic we had that one year that was finally traced back to the comic books that traveled cabin to cabin. And the stories could go on and on. That was a special time in my life and I thank you all who were part of it. My best wishes for everyone who can attend, and a special hello to my good friend Dick McKnight. Where would Camp Day be without his thoughtful, dedicated, inspiring leadership? Thanks so much for thinking to invite me and I am sorry that I can't be there in person but know I am surely with you all in spirit. Something about that "Beacon Light" that could bring tears to my eyes. In Friendship, Jack Baynes

comments: The 2002 Reunion was absolutely the best! It was awesome to see so many faces from so long ago. We all had so many of the same memories of the myriad of experiences we individually had. Over and over I heard people say that their time at camp moulded their core. We were taught so much but we were all too busy playing softball, basketball, volleyball, swimming, crafts, and on and on, to know how much we had learned. The history of the camp was so apparent at the reunion. Rumor has it that Dick McKnight has been associated with the camp, one way or another, for 7 decades. Why does it seem that the placques from my era (60-66) are closer to the porch? I can't believe that canvas is still hanging in the boathouse. The camp certainly has changed in the 40 yrs since I was there, but as people have said here, it's still very much the same. The camp has an international flavor but it's the same kind of kid who comes here now as before. For those of you who weren't able to come back this year, you really should try to come next year. Time stands still. It was a great weekend. We were treated like heads of state. A four star hotel wouldn't have half as many memories. Great job by guys like Mike Sobol, Phil Levine, Steve Miller and others who put it all together, and got the word out. Hopefully word will spread further and there'll be more of us alumni next year. The camp has a wonderful and storied history let's keep it going.

comments: Once again, Mr. Harsip has made a definitive statement, this time in his recap of last week's alumni reunion. What a great taste of old times (really old!). Unlike last summer's one day tease, those of us who spent one, or in a few hardy cases, two nights got a full dose of nostalgia. The smell of the tent canvas (the absence of the smell of the greenies), the night sounds (other than the snoring), the feeling when we walked onto the Senior ball field -- now Alumni Field (I don't really believe I used to put the ball into the woods in left center, but some of you swear it's true), and being referred to as Pony once again. So much at FAD has changed (much of it clearly for the better) while so much remains the same. In addition to the nostalgia, I was deeply impressed by the staff's obvious love for the old place and the incredible spirit and enthusiasm. Even more impressive is the miracle that Dick and Sonia have wrought, reinventing the camp and elevating it to a level that appears to have exceeded the golden era that the alumni recall from our days. Thank you all so much for your stewardship. This past Wednesday I took my youngest son off to another camp, and could not resist telling him that as much as he loves the place he goes to, he really would have loved FAD. In his 14 year old wisdom, he said that Camp Day was my place and he wanted a special place of his own. He was so right on both counts! Many thanks to the reunion organizing committee and to Steve - The Perpetual Camper - Miller. For all who considered attending the reunion last weekend but did not -- don't make the same mistake next year.

comments: What a great time at the June reunion. Who says you can't relive your childhood? A bunch of 40-50 year old men enjoyed themselves tremendously, and have the aches and pains to prove it! We all have changed, but somehow with all the reminiscing, the years we were away from camp disappeared. The looks on "old camper" faces were the same as 40 years ago. Speaking of aches and pains, the "old campers" defeated the current Camp Day staff in a tough fought softball game (that pitted pitcher Rachael Levine vs her old man father at the plate, - better luck next year Rach!). I hope there are some pictures of game action, because the alumni were reported to have made plays in the field that defied their physical age. Timely hitting by Scott (Bernie) Bernstein, Barry Harsip, Steve Miller, Mark Cohen, Paul Horwitz, Greg Matteosian, and the usual patent rocket line drives by Jeff Grossman. Pitching smart for the alumni was Henry Gordon. The rest is history. Thanks Dick and Sonya for a wonderful weekend, and thanks for years of great camp memories. Phil Levine

comments: Sorry for not sending this note for two weeks. For those of you who didn't attend the reunion, if you had a great time attending FA Day as a camper and/or counselor, the reunion will magnify the experience 100 fold. It truly was an amazing experience. To sit and talk to people you haven't seen for upwards of 40 years and not have that uncomfortable "nothing to say" silence not exist is unusual. We all owe Steve Miller, Mike Sobol, Phil Levine and I'm sure others a great deal of thanks for all they've done over the years. Please, if you didn't go this year, or know someone who didn't go, tell him/her to come next year. It is worth every mosquito bite and pulled muscle I have from the weekend. Whoops, gotta go, taps just sounded.

Dick McNight has done a fabulous job running the camp over the years. Congratulations to Dick and his team (including my daughter, Renee.) Camp Day looks as strong as ever. I followed the high tech holy grail to the west coast, and so I don't get back east very often. I certainly miss the opportunity to get back together with old friends from summers past. Best of Luck to all! Jim

comments: Staying in Sturbridge for a few days, I drove out to camp yesterday. Luckily, Dick and Sonja were there for the weekend, and Mike, whom I met a couple of years ago while visiting. We had a wonderful chat and they told me about this site. On the way back to Sturbridge, I took a nice swim at the Public Beach and then hit Rom's for dinner. (Did their sauce change?) There any many memories and familiar names coming back from the past. Great work on the site and as always, a lot done by Mark Cohen! All the best to everyone, and see you on the shores of Quacumquasit...

comments: First, I would like to appologiuse for the way I left and ot saying good-bye to everyone. I thought and tried to find a way that I could have made it to awards night and say good-bye properly, and get everyone's e-mailing address. But I all hope you all forgive me. I was very dissapointed in the fact i couldn't leave campus and hated the fact I couldn't come back. But I have to thank cabin 22 (anthony, sean, matt, mike, nate, joe, lewis, iilan, jon, dan, brandon, my CIT adam and if i forgot anyone i'm sorry there were too many of you) and the rest of the midgets and staff for a fantastic summer, which was one of the best if not the best summer of my life. I love you all, please keep in touch with me whoever reads this from my campers, and the staff of 2002, I wanna know how everyone's doin.

comments: Curiosity lead me to this wonderful web site. I was a camper from 1955-1959. Some of the fondest childhood memories I recall were during those summers at Camp Day. Breaking the Midget unit Broad jump record, and capturing the enemy flag for my team still are moments etched in my mind. I remember Dick Mcnight when he was a counsellor in the midget unit I guess it was 1956. He was a special guy to me, I think I was 9 years old. I noticed my picture amongst the midget unit group from that era. Its amazing that I could recognize and name so many kids in that picture almost 50 yrs. later. Long live Camp Frank A Day. A great part of my life.
